Montclair State 3, Juniata 0

Montclair, N.J. ? The Juniata College field hockey team knew its early-season schedule would pose a stiff test before the team got into its conference schedule, and that proved to be accurate on Saturday as the Eagles fell to Montclair State by a 3-0 score in Montclair. Juniata is now 1-2 in the early going, while the home team improved to 3-0.
The home team put the pressure on offensively in the early going. Off of a penalty corner Montclair got off a pair of shots, the first one saved by Juniata keeper Andrea Way (Fair Haven Union/Fair Haven, Vt.) and the second knocked away by Juniata defender Elise Zimmerman (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Spring). But Montclair would earn a penalty stroke soon after, and Jenn Soss converted the chance to give the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the match.

Juniata would force Montclair goalkeeper Robyn Apicelli into a pair of saves in the rest of the half, but neither team would score as the teams went into halftime with Juniata trailing 1-0.

Montclair added to the lead off another penalty corner as Soss collected a pass from Alex Kelly and scored her second goal of the match with 25 minutes remaining in the contest. As Juniata pressured late trying to cut into the lead Montclair added its final tally as Kelly found the back of the cage off an assist from Kristen Swartz.

The Eagles would earn one final penalty corner late in the match, but could not cut into the Montclair advantage.

Way finished the match with five saves for Juniata, while Apicelli recorded three saves in earning the shutout.

Juniata returns to action on Sunday with a non-conference match against William Patterson.
