Washington, Pa.? After a rocky 2004 season the Juniata College women?s tennis team got off to a rousing start in the 2005 campaign as the Eagles swept Washington & Jefferson 9-0 in its season opener in Washington Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles claimed each singles match in straight sets, and controlled doubles action as well to earn its first win of the year, which matched its win total from all of the 2004 season.

Four Juniata freshmen opened their collegiate careers with singles and doubles victories. Ashley Andrews (Altoona/Altoona) earned a 6-1, 6-3 win at first singles and teamed with Caroline Weisser (York Suburban/York) to post am 8-1 win at first doubles. Weisser won her number-two singles match by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Ye Kyung Kwan (Cumberland Valley/Enola) claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles, while junior Molly Coursey (Westminster/Hanover) earned her singles win by a 6-4, 6-2 score at the fourth singles. That duo then claimed an 8-2 victory at the second doubles position.

Juniata?s fourth freshman Sarah Roby (Red Land/Lewisberry) notched a 6-2, 6-3 triumph at fifth singles, and Megan Carpenter (Huntingdon/Huntingdon) rounded out the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the sixth singles spot. That final pairing teamed at the third doubles position and claimed an 8-4 victory.

The Eagles will look to continue their early-season success on Tuesday when they travel to take on Thiel College.
