JUNIATA TRACK TOPS SCHOOL RECORDS AT WESTERN PA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Pittsburgh, Pa.? The Juniata College women?s and men?s track and field teams both topped previous school records, and posted strong performances at the Western Pennsylvania Championships in Pittsburgh. The Eagle men finished eight out of the 14-team field, while the women placed 14th of 14 teams.

The Juniata men piled up 27 points in the meet, highlighted by two top finishes in the 100-meter dash. Randy Anderson (DuBois/DuBois) ran to a second-place finish with a time of 11.35, while Dustin Sier (Smithsburg/Smithsburg, Md.) placed fifth in the event. That duo also helped Juniata run to a second-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay as they were joined by Jeremy Weber (Garden Spot/Mohnton) and Gary Ondecko (Bishop Carroll/Northern Cambria).

For the second-consecutive week, Juniata also had a school record broken by junior Justin Fritzius (Central York/York). After breaking the 3,000-meter steeplechase record a week ago, he topped the school mark in the 5,000. He covered the distance in a time of 16:03.20 which broke his own school record of 16:09.98.

Rounding out the point-scoring performances for Juniata was freshman Matthew Booth (Allentown Central Catholic/Allentown) who jumped to a sixth-place finish in the long jump.

For the Eagle women the top performance came from Kira Troutman (Line Mountain/Valley View) who placed fourth in the javelin. Elena Amato (Notre Dame Prep./Baltimore, Md.) added an eighth-place finish in the 800-meters.

Debbie Delaney (Franklin/Reisertown, Md.) took care of the record-breaking on the women?s side as she earned a new school record in the hammer throw. Delaney earned an 11th-place finish with her throw of 112? 03?, breaking the previous record of 109? 8 ½? which was set in 2003.

Juniata will get its first look at several of the teams in will face at the MAC Championships next week when the team competes at the Messiah Invitational.
