Juniata 1, Susquehanna 0

Selinsgrove, Pa. ? Freshman Kim Wagner (Middletown/Middletown) scored a goal with 6:21 remaining to break a scoreless tie and earn the Juniata College field hockey team a 1-0 victory over Commonwealth Conference foe Susquehanna in Selinsgrove Wednesday afternoon. The victory improves Juniata to 14-2 overall, and upped its conference record to 6-1. Susquehanna fell to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference with the loss.

Juniata?s 14 victories matches the regular-season win total from last year, which is the most wins the Juniata field hockey program has ever had in the regular season. The program record for wins in a year is 15, which the team established last season.

Wagner?s goal was her 15th of the season, leaving her just one tally shy of matching the program record for goals in a season. Kathleen McGowan scored 16 goals in the 1988 season. Wagner stands in second-place by herself with 15 goals.

Wagner scored the unassisted goal as she broke in for a one-on-one situation with Susquehanna goalie Shannon Baker. The Eagles would make the goal stand up to earn its eighth one-goal victory of the year.

Juniata keeper Melonie Sappe? (Dallas/Shavertown) helped keep the match scoreless when she stopped a Susquehanna penalty stroke with 16:34 remaining in the second half. It was one of four saves Sappe? made on the day, all of which came in the second half. It was the sixth shutout of the season for Sappe?.

The Eagles controlled play throughout the match, out-shooting the home team 21-4 for the game. Baker made nine saves in goal for Susquehanna.

Juniata will play its regular-season finale on Saturday when the Eagles host Houghton. Juniata will then host Commonwealth Conference foe Lebanon Valley for a Commonwealth Semifinal on the following Wednesday.
