Juniata 1, Villa Julie 0

Huntingdon, Pa. ? Rebecca Shoaf (Madison/Madison, N.J.) broke a scoreless tie with a little over 29 minutes to play in the second half, propelling Juniata to a 1-0 win over visiting Villa Julie College Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon. The win evens the Eagles record to 4-4-1 on the season. Villa Julie drops to 3-4 with the loss.

After a scoreless first half, Juniata finally got on the board with Shoaf?s goal. Following a Juniata shot on goal, Villa Julie keeper Jen Roantes couldn?t secure the ball. During the ensuing melee in front of the net, Lindsay Garvey (Willsboro Central/Essex, N.Y.) tapped the ball to Shoaf, who put it away for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Garvey was credited with the assist.

One goal would be all the Juniata defense would need. A stellar defensive effort relieved some pressure off goalkeeper Lisa Ruso (Lakeland/Haskell, N.J.). Ruso responded when challenged, though, stopping all six shots she faced. Three of her six saves came with under twenty minutes to play, with the visitors attempting to rally. The shutout was the second of the season for Ruso. Roantes finished the match with three saves for the Mustangs.

The win is Juniata?s second in a row. The Eagles will look to continue their hot play next Wednesday, when they travel to conference opponent Messiah in hopes of their first conference win of the season. Last season, Juniata played the perennial MAC powerhouse to a 0-0 draw.
