Marietta 1, Juniata 0

Altoona, Pa. ? A late penalty kick was the difference in a defensive contest as the Juniata College men?s soccer team fell by a 1-0 score to Marietta in the first round of the Penn State Altoona Challenge Cup in Altoona on Saturday. Juniata is now 0-4 on the season.

Mark Guthridge (DuBois/DuBois) made six saves in net for Juniata, but he was unable to stop a penalty shot in the 69th minute that proved to be the only score in the game. Marcos Varca converted the opportunity after the Juniata foul in the box.

It was a defensive struggle on both sides as the two teams combined for 18 shots. The Eagles tallied five shots in the match, with junior striker Jeff Gehring (Exeter Township/Reading) pacing the team with a pair of shots. The Eagles forced Adam Cervenka to make two saves in net for Marietta.

Gehring nearly put the Eagles on the board in the 29th minute, but his effort on goal was turned away by Cervenka. He also forced a save from the keeper early in the second half, but Juniata was unable to get on the scoreboard.

Juniata will compete in the tournament?s consolation match on Sunday morning.
